BQ Guidance support coaching external advice mentoring

How can I find the right support, advice

and guidance in my business?

No entrepreneur has ever done it all alone.

You need help, but what type of help do you need?

No human being has ever achieved anything of note on his or her own. In business and in life humans need other people, for support, guidance and belonging. We are wired that way. A mentor of mine used to say: “Right now there’s a monkey in Africa somewhere, dying because he’s been kicked out of his tribe”. We can not function in isolation. That doesn’t mean we don’t sometimes like being on our own, and some people need more alone time than others, but we all need support.

Powerful 12 Questions Guide and videos

But hiring a coach, a mentor or adviser is a big step. There’s a lot riding on getting it right. Hence I have created the 12 Questions Guide and Cheat Sheet for finding and hiring the right coach for you. You can download the Guide by filling in the forms on this page or you can go straight to the special 12 Questions page on my website and besides the Guide, there is also a second much more comprehensive video to help you through the whole process of finding, inteviewing and selecting the perfect coach for you and your business.

It takes a village

People who build Beautiful Businesses and Lives, know it takes a village and they are always looking for the right support. My oldest and most successful client, has three different coaches, and he cycles between us. He does 6 months with me and then he goes and works with his business coach in New Zealand and then he does a stint with his executive coach and then he comes back to me again.  (You can read the story of Narinder Singh from QE foodstores here)

Besides us three coaches Narinder has developed important relationships with his external accountant, his HR consultant, a marketing consultant, an IT consultant and a property adviser. He’s involved all of his advisers in all of his big decisions and planning in the past 10 years, and he credits his team of advisers and coaches with the fact he is so successful. (He’s a humble man, so let me put it on record now that his success is at least equally due to his incredible passion and determination, but the point remains).

As I said above, we all need support when developing our businesses. And what’s more, we need different kinds of support at different stages on the journey. I myself have engaged, mentors, coaches, consultants, counsellors and therapists in the past 15 years and I’ve joined various different business support groups at different times as well.

The main forms of business support:

Mentoring:

Mentors are often people who’ve “been there, done that”. They’re usually a bit older, they might even be retired and they often have direct experience in your specific industry or business type. Some mentors do their mentoring on a volunteer basis, others get paid a little or a lot. Mentoring can be really powerful in the early years of developing your business. I believe the most effective method to find a great mentor is to find someone you look up to in your industry and approach him or her and simply ask them.

Many senior business owners really enjoy being asked to “give back”. I have have taken a role of mentor for some young business owners in the past and you can feel free to contact me to discuss a mentoring relationship. There are also a number of small business mentoring organisations you can contact. One of them is the Small Business Mentoring Services, find out more here.

Whether you work with a volunteer mentor or a paid one, there is one thing you must keep in mind to get the most out of the relationship: You have to drive the agenda. When you sit down with your mentor you have to know what specific questions you need to address in the meeting and what input you need from your mentor. If you don’t control the agenda you’ll waste enormous amounts of time and the mentor will start to feel uncomfortable. (More about the secrets of great mentoring relationships here).

Business Coaching Companies:

Business coaching companies generally have developed a system for growing a business and their coaches will teach you the system and help you implement it. One of the best organisations I’ve come across who do exactly this and don’t stray outside of that model are EOS Worldwide. Their Australian franchisee is contactable here.

I believe it can be very useful to work with the right business coaching company for a while, to learn their systems and get help with it’s implementation into your business. But to build a Beautiful Business that Stands the Test of Time, you can’t ignore the personal side of growing your business: Find an executive or leadership coach or someone like me (see below) to support you in the journey of personal development and leadership that is integral to creating the business you dream of.

Business-Life Coaching:

I am a Business-Life Coach. What that means is that I start from the principle that:

“Your business is what it is today, because of who you are today”.

This means that if you want your business to change, you must be prepared to change first.

So I, and coaches like me, combine the “hard” business systems with the “soft” personal skills. I will teach you about the latest business management systems and techniques, design new systems customised to your business and help you implement them, but at the same time we’ll be working on what it takes to be a great business owner. We’ll work on leadership skills, self management skills, developing your vision, prioritising, goal setting, strategic thinking, planning, communication, people management, and how to get out of crisis management. (More here)

Free Five Step Discovery Process:

Before we engage in any of my coaching programs, I always suggest we follow my Five Steps to Discovery Process, starting with a free 30 minute Discovery Coaching session (Skype) combined with a short business discovery survey and report. You can book a Discovery Business Coaching session and Business Discovery Survey through any one of the forms on The Five Steps page here. In the Discovery session, we’ll get to know each other a little and I’ll get some insight into what stage you and your business are at, allowing me to tailor the next steps in the Five Steps to Discovery Process

Executive Coaching/ Leadership Coaching:

An Executive or Leadership Coach is skilled in helping people develop their leadership skills. Executive coaches are more often engaged with executives of larger organisations than with small business owners, but one of the three coaches that Narinder Singh, who I talk about above, works with is an executive coach. There are many executive coaches to choose from. The best I can suggest is to do an introductory session with 3 different executive coaches and make your assessment based on how you feel at the end of each of the three sessions.

Choosing an executive coach is almost entirely about how you click with him or her. Feel free to send me an email to ask for a referral to a trustworthy executive coach. You might also have a look at the website of the International Coach Federation, it’s the professional body of record for executive coaches worldwide.

Advisory Boards:

Pulling together an advisory board for your business can be a highly effective strategy to get the support you need to drive the development of your business forward. You can create your own board and ask a bunch of people you trust, with varying skills and experience to become part of your board, and maybe meet with them once a month for 2 or 3 hours. You may decide to pay these board members a fee for their time and input or you may ask them to sit on your board on a voluntary basis, and you yourself may in turn do the same for someone else. Advisory boards like this are often really valuable and offer great support, but they can sometimes be short lived, because of time pressure on various board members.

You can also join an advisory board program run by specialist organisations. Those programs are usually run by a professional facilitator and there might be anywhere from 5 to maybe 15 members on a board, all of whom are business owners and the members meet every month and support each other. I run a board program like that from time to time called The Business Growth Club and there are various other organisation that do the same thing such as TEC, The CEO Institute and Coraggio. I’ve also written a White Paper about benefits of Advisory Boards that you can download here.

Business study and training:

At different stages on the journey of entrepreneurship it may be important to improve your skill and knowledge levels. When moving from solo-entrepreneur to small business owner and beyond it can simply be beneficial to go back to school and learn about the latest business management techniques and philosophies.  You can go to university and take post graduate or summer school  courses on specific topics in marketing, innovation, management, leadership etc, or you may enroll in a full MBA program.

Alternatively it may be more relevant for you to engage with the Vocational Education and Training system (VET, via TAFE or via many registered private training organisations in the country, more here) The Business Growth Club program I mentioned above often incorporates a VET training component, leading to the Diploma of Business or to a Diploma of Leadership.

How can I create more growth for my business?

business growth strategy Summary: To build a Beautiful Business and Life, we need growth. Seth Godin made a great statement some years ago on his blog. He said: To build a great business you only have to do two things: first you have to do great work or deliver a great product and second you have to make sure lots of people know about it. And that’s exactly how simple it is to build a Beautiful Business that Stands the Test of time. But, as with so many things in life, it’s easier said than done.

Business growth is about research and product and systems and quality assurance and innovation and inventory management and people management and everything in between and then when you get that right, it’s about customers, and marketing and sales and communications and PR and SEO and content marketing and advertising and design and branding and of course leadership and you might well argue that before all of that comes Visioning, Mission, Purpose, Goal setting and Strategic planning. In short Business growth touches all aspects of business. Read More Here…

How can I make and keep more money?

make more profit Summary: To build a Beautiful Business and Life, we need to make profit. A business that doesn’t make profit and that doesn’t generate cash flow isn’t a business, it’s a hobby. Profit is not the Purpose of business, and nor is generating Cash the reason the business exists, but without profit and cash it is not possible for the business to deliver on it’s Purpose.

Business growth will have an impact on the flow of profit and money in the business, both positively and negatively, but many other aspects of business have an impact as well. There’s pricing, discounting, inventory management, costing, trade terms , collection policies and procedures, expense management, cost control and many other aspects of business will determine the profitability and sustainability of your business.

And on the other hand there is financial management. The management, reporting and analysing of the flow of profit and money through the business. Having your fingers on the pulse of all of the key indicators of the health of your business every day, week, month and year. Management of the numbers in other words. Read More Here…

How can I become less overwhelmed and feel happier every day?

overwhelm business fun Summary: To build a Beautiful Business and Life, we need to get unstuck. In my experience, business owners operate in a state of overwhelm many days of the week. They’re often first in the door in the morning, last out the door at night and have to catch up on their admin and email after dinner. They run around from crisis to crisis most days, extinguishing brush fires along the way.

Staff don’t seem able to tie their own shoe laces without input and supervision from the boss. Customers expect the business owner personally to solve all their problems, immediately,  rather than the perfectly qualified and expensive staff that are employed by the business for that purpose.

As a result, the critical business development projects are constantly pushed back and the business gets stuck in the mud. The way out of this overwhelm is to learn to focus on three letters FUN. Fun in Business is the opposite of overwhelm. Developing a discipline on making Business Fun again works, because when business is Fun it means everything is working. Read More Here…

How can I find the right support, advice and guidance?

guidance coaching support Summary: To build a Beautiful Business and Life, we need support. One of the most consistent complaints I hear from business owners is that it’s all down to them. They feel alone and unsure of themselves. They need to have a sounding board. The people around them don’t get it. The staff are affected by the decisions the business owner needs to make, and so are their spouses and family.

Human beings work well with external accountability and advice. Independent external support is invaluable to any business owner who wants to build a Beautiful Business that Stands the Test of Time. External support can take many forms: A mentor, a business or life coach, management consultant, a virtual board, an executive coaching group, a regular get together with a group of fellow business owner buddies or all of the above.

One thing is for sure: Don’t think you can do it on your own. But how do you go about finding the right support for you? Read More Here…

How can I find work-life-balance in my business and my life?

business woman jetty laptop Summary: To build a Beautiful Business and Life, we need to create a balance between the demands of the business and those of the rest of our lives.

In the many years I’ve worked with business owners, I’ve come to believe that business owners are the most “guilt driven” people on the planet, “worse than Catholics” I sometimes joke. Business owners generally go through life believing they are not up to the job in some way. They tell themselves (and me), that to compensate for their perceived failures, they’ve got to work harder than anyone else in their business or else how could they ever ask their people to put in the hard yards when required? (see also what I wrote above about overwhelm). But in the mean time they’re missing out on the important stuff in life. Their health and well-being suffers, as are their families.

For business owners to create a greater balance between work and life, the first step is to acknowledge that owning a business is never a 9-to-5 job, you probably won’t ever be able to close the door behind you on the way home entirely. The business is your baby, you’ve put your heart and soul into it and it’s part of who you are as a person.

Once you acknowledge that fact, the immediate next step is to recognise that your own time, your health and your general well-being are the most valuable and important assets of your business and as the business owner it is your prime responsibility to look after your assets. In other words, not looking after yourself and ensuring you are in a great physical and mental state means you are not taking your responsibilities as the owner of the business seriously. Once you’ve learnt to accept the realities of those two principles (contradictory as they might seem from time to time), you’re on the path to create the business and life you dream off. How can I become a better business owner and leader?

leadership Summary: To build a Beautiful Business and Life, we have to become better business owners. As I’ve said above in the “work – life – balance” summary, most business owners feel they’re not quite cutting it as entrepreneurs. Oftentimes, business owners start their business on the back of their profession, trade or skill they have learnt (plumber, architect, accountant, chef) and they feel confident in that particular skill. But when they start a business based on that profession, they suddenly realise that it takes a lot more than being a great plumber to build a great plumbing business.

Few business owners have studied to be a business owner, and even those who have attained an MBA or similar qualification, find that they’re not prepared for the realities of life as a small business owner. Suddenly everything is down to you, the big decisions about whether or not to bid for that contract, or hire that expensive employee, or sign the lease for the new office, as well as making sure the toilets are stocked with toilet paper and that there’s ink for the printer.

To top it off, your people look to you for having Vision (with a capital “V”), having the answers and being the leader. It’s a frightening place to stand in the middle of, but there are three pieces of good news: (1) You got this far and you’re still breathing so you must be doing something right. (2) Your people actually want you to be the leader and they’re ready to forgive you just about any balls up you’re going to make along the way. (3) Leadership is something you can learn, practice and get better at. Read More Here…

Family business: How can we negotiate our roles as business and life partners better?

husband and wife family business Summary: To build a Beautiful Family Business and Life, we need to get good both at working with our spouses as well as living with them. As I’ve said above in the “better business owner” summary, many businesses are founded on the profession of the business owner. The plumber starts a plumbing business and the lawyer starts a law practice. A little way into the life of the business, the founder of the business, along with the spouse of the founder, starts to appreciate that it takes more than being a great lawyer to build a great lawyer business and the business flounders.

Often, it is at this point that the spouse decides to enter the business as well, to sort out the chaos, in no small measure, to protect the interests of the family, and the family business is born. 70% of all businesses in Australia are family businesses and a large percentage of those can be classed as husband and wife family businesses.

In my experience there is wonderful opportunity in being in business with your spouse. It holds the possibility of providing for your family very well and there is a great opportunity to grow as a couple. But waking up beside your business partner in bed every morning also comes with a bunch of unique challenges. Read More Here…

Why I don’t believe in business coaching and why it works

Why coaching works

Why business coaching works captain the in the storm

Don’t talk to me about the storms and the reefs, Coach,  just tell me we’ll be safe

I was working with a business – life coaching client recently, let’s call him Peter. Peter set a big Goal for himself as part of our work together.

Peter’s Goal was so big, in fact, that I was bothered by it. You see, I know from experience, that setting Goals that are too big are likely to have a demotivational effect and worse, can lead to disappointment.

I challenged Peter and asked him if he felt confident the Goal was realistic, and if he felt he could make it happen in the time we had. Peter was adamant. Although he wasn’t sure if he could do it, he wanted to stretch himself and “set it out there”. Peter has done a lot of self-development work and he believes in a version of the “Law of Attraction”, which loosely states that you get what you focus on in life and in business.

Goal blown out of the water

3 Weeks later, Peter rang me unexpectedly. He’d just signed a new contract that meant he’d blown his Goal out of the water two weeks early.

Wonderful news, very exciting and I truly feel Peter deserves every dollar of that success, because he is one of the nicest guys I know.

Peter said: “There you go, I knew it, when you set it out there, the Universe will provide”.

And it’s such a comforting idea, isn’t it? The idea that there is some greater power that’s going to look after you in your time of need. It’s lovely that Peter felt confirmed in his beliefs. It will no doubt help him to remain motivated to move forward in his business and that was his biggest problem prior to coming to see me.

But it confirmed my growing confusions.

I don’t believe

You see, I do not believe in the “Law of Attraction”, or it’s many variants. I don’t even believe in traditional Goal setting anymore. As a matter of fact, there are a whole bunch of foundational principles of my profession of coaching that I have stopped believing in. Consequently, in the past years, I’ve adjusted the way I work with my clients to rely only on well-established scientific principles.

And my clients achieve great things in their businesses and their lives and I am excited and proud of the work I do with them. But the experience with Peter recently makes me wonder if I’m doing the right thing for my clients.

You see, Peter is an old hand at being coached and mentored. I’ve known him for years and we have done a lot of work together. Also, Peter moves in a world where he comes across self-development gurus of many ilks all the time, and he’s convinced by the self-development messages he hears from them. What’s more, Peter and I have become good friends over the years, so he felt comfortable enough with me to push back and set the Goal he wanted to set. It worked out great for him, but not everyone has Peter’s confidence or clarity.

The many contradictions

It’s all very well for me to question myself and my beliefs. I don’t believe anything in life or business is ever black and white, there are no simple rules. Here’s just a few of those contradictions in business:

  • A business must make profit or else it’s a hobby… but… Making profit is not the Purpose of business.
  • A business must have a plan to move forward… but… Planning is guessing
  • Goalsetting is important… but… Goals are not destinations, just directions.
  • Great leaders are fiercely ambitious… but… Not for themselves
  • Systemisation is critical for developing your business… but… I’d hate to live in a world where all restaurants are McDonalds.
  • Knowing how to “close” a sale is a key skill in business… but… The most successful people in business and in life “Give without expectation of return”.
  • Growing your business is fine… but… Don’t focus on growth (focus on delivery instead).
  • Change your business, make it grow, make more money… but… Not unless you yourself change and grow first.

Life is full of contradictions such as those. Sure, it would be easier if it wasn’t and we all like the idea of winning the lottery, but even winning the lottery turns out not to be as great as we thought. (Read about lottery winners and happiness here)

And so I believe questioning myself is healthy, it keeps me sharp and pushing the boundaries. But it’s not necessarily what my clients need from me.

The shortest route

business coaching The experience with Peter has shown me that most clients simply want to get from point A to point B, via the shortest route possible, with as few detours as possible. And they look for someone to help them get there.

Maybe, when they come across me, they hear my questioning, my lack of certainty and start to wonder if getting my help might take them up the scenic route to point B, and so they’ll move on to someone who promises to take them up the freeway instead.

And that’s a shame, because the thing is, I know I transform people’s lives and businesses. I have literally hundreds of past clients who will attest to that fact.

So what I need to do is to communicate that you can trust me to take you on an amazing journey and adventure, and that like the captain of the ship, I know how to handle the storms when they come up. You don’t particularly want me to talk about the reefs we might hit under way, you just want to know we’ll be safe.

And this blog post?… It’s doing exactly the opposite… isn’t it?… Ah well, Peter loves me anyway.

Why you need a business – life coach

why you need a business coach

Are you the bottle neck in your business?

Why you need a business coach Which Business – Life coach is right for you?

A friend of mine and former client, Geoff Anderson, recently wrote a guest post on my blog titled: “Why I didn’t need a business coach”. Here is the link: https://www.newperspectives.com.au/need-business-coach/

It’s a lovely article and what’s more, it actually led to me gaining a new client, someone else who “didn’t need a business coach”. Methinks I owe Geoff lunch, this Friday in Potts Point. (More detail about the different forms of business support that are available to small business owners and how to find the right one for you here)

I myself have never been without a coach, a mentor or someone of that ilk in the past 12 years, even though I clearly “never needed one either”.

So maybe it’s now is the right time for you you: How do you know it’s time to find a business – life coach; what kind of business – life coach should you look for.

Wild West

One of the reasons it’s so confusing to answer those questions, is that business coaching is an undefined and unregulated profession. Nobody actually knows what the definition of a business coach is, or worse what makes a good or bad business coach. If you decide to put up a shingle and call yourself a business coach tomorrow, there’s nothing to stop you doing so. The coaching world is a bit of a Wild West. There are many different types of coaches and the quality of their services varies enormously.

I refer to myself as a business – life coach, but few business or life coaches support their clients in the same way that I do.

Roughly speaking I believe there are two big distinctions to make. The big mass of business coaches out there can be divided into those who have a business development system that they want you to buy from them and implement with their help, on the one hand and then there are those who generally operate on their own and work with you to develop yourself as an effective business owner and leader and work with you to create your own systems and improvements. The first group largely relies on the quality of their standardised business development system to help you create the business you dream of (examples of the coaching companies in this mould are ActionCoach, Emyth, Shirlaws, Gallop Solutions and many others). The second group largely relies on the knowledge and business experience of the actual coach and is based around a committed personal relationship between the client and the coach (I myself am firmly in the second camp and have started distinguishing myself from the first group, the conventional business coaching companies by introducing myself as a Business – Life Coach).

Sitting here, not knowing anything about you, I can’t tell you which of these models is going to be right for you. I’ve known business owners who’ve done really well with companies such as Gallop and Shirlaws, and others for whom the standardised business systems haven’t worked at all. Similarly I’ve know many people who have thrived in the individual coaching model and others who preferred the standardised approach.

It’s personal

Why you need a business coach It’s personal. The first model is all about getting the best systems into the business first and the second model is all about developing the people – the business owner specifically – to change their mindset and grow as leaders and entrepreneurs and allowing the rest to follow.

It’s a classic “Chicken or Egg dilemma”: people first and systems later, or systems first and people will follow? Once you’ve decided that like Geoff Anderson “You really don’t need a business coach”, How do you proceed?

I’d like to suggest you ask yourself this question:

What or who is the greatest bottle neck in my business?

Is it:

  1. Our lack of quality systems
  2. Me

If your answer is A, go and have chat with Gallop Solutions for example, I know them and they are good people, here is their website: http://gallopsolutions.com/

AYR Retail Business Coach

The World of Retail

Watch this quick video in which I talk about my experiences as a business coach for retail business owners. There are some unique challenges that come with building a retail business; A business that sells goods directly to consumers.

Retail is full of great opportunities and great challenges. I have coached and mentored business owners in many and varied retail operations from supermarkets and handbags to bicycles, candles and motor scooters. There is an art to getting a retail business to hum and the difference between a shop that works and one that doesn’t can seem quite mysterious at times. But most of the time there is no mystery at all. It’s all about discipline and consistency, and constantly asking yourself: What else do my customers want next?

“Roland has been an integral part of the success of QE Foodstores, for many years now and I trust will remain so for years to come.”

(Narinder Badhan Singh QE Foodstores)

Does this sound like you?

As a business coach for retail business owners, these are some of the things I often hear owners of retail businesses say:

  • “The major chains are always undercutting us”
  • “People come in and use us as a show room and then they go an buy online (and sometimes even bring in the thing they bought online for us to fit or install for them)”
  • “My staff just don’t care”
  • “My suppliers treat me as a second class citizen compared to the major chains”

  • “I’ve spent a fortune on marketing but I don’t think it’s paying off”
  • “Wastage is what’s eating my margins”
  • “Every time I find a new site, some major chain offers more money to the landlord than I can afford.”
  • “Shoplifting costs me a lot of money.”
  • “Centre management is just bleeding us”
  • “I have to discount too much to turn my stock”
  • “Staff come and go so much that it’s really hard to create an engaged company culture”

Running a retail business is challenging. The risks are large. Setting up a shop usually involves a significant investment, you generally have to sign up to a commercial lease for at least 3 years, that is guaranteed by your personal property, and if you set up shop in a major centre, the lease conditions can be onerous. Staff are often itinerant and difficult to engage and motivate, and in these days of instant internet shopping, it can be difficult to convince customers to buy from you rather than from Ebay. And yet, retail offers some wonderful opportunities, to build a great Fun Business that sustains you for years to come.

“In one session, Roland helps me translate a weeks worth of swirling ideas (than may not eventuate) into reality”

(Ralph Leavesy-Moase)

AYW Business Coach for Studios and Workshops

Studios, Salons and Workshops

Watch this quick video in which I talk about some of the unique challenges that come with building a business that operates like a salon, studio or a workshop… on the face of it very different kind of businesses but there is also a really specific set of common factors.

Over the past 11 years I have coached and mentored many owners of Salons, Studios and Workshops. Studio business are all about having jobs booked in on a schedule and having to complete the job inside the schedule.  In that way a hair or nail salon operates quite similarly to a mechanics workshop (hairdressers, beauty salons, panel beaters, print studios etc). As a coach for Studios and Workshops I understand that the Studio business model has all kinds of unique challenges.

“Working with Roland has been the most productive time I have ever dedicated to myself and my business.”

(Anna Field, The Paddington Beauty Room)

Does this sound like you?

These are some of the things I often hear owners of Studios, Salons and Workshops say:

  • “As soon as I’ve finished training my staff, and they start to work out well, they leave me again.”
  • “I can never know how busy the day or the week is going to be, rostering my staff is a nightmare.”
  • “I get so many tyre kickers ringing up, they waste so much of my time”
  • “My staff just don’t care the way I do, and my customers know it.”
  • “My staff earn more money than I do.”

  • “I do everything I can to look after my staff but they walk all over me.”
  • “To be profitable we have to focus on ‘upselling’ our clients, but we just don’t seem to be very good at it.”
  • “I keep my fingers crossed every day that we don’t get too many cancellations or that we’ll have enough walk-ins.”
  • “I spend a fortune advertising the studio in the local rags, but I’m not sure it actually pays off.”
  • “I have to be on the Studio floor all day to make sure things don’t fall apart, so I can only work “on” the business at night.”
  • “I focus a lot on safety in the Studio, but I live in fear of being audited by Workcover one day.”

Click here to download my Free Guide to finding the perfect coach or mentor for you.

Running a Studio type of business can be incredibly stressful and it can feel like all you can do is react to what happens rather than pro-actively build your business. Finding and keeping the right staff is often one of the greatest challenges, industry wages are generally relatively low and hence the staff are often highly itinerant. Marketing on a tight budget and time management are also often particular challenges because of the many distractions the day brings.

“Great results require great effort and great guidance, Roland is such a guide”

(Sebastiaan de Jonge, KwikKopy Auburn)

What you can expect:

How I’ll help you build a business that stands the test of time:

  • Finding absolute clarity about the Purpose of your business and developing a comprehensive but practical business plan and marketing plan from that foundation. Know where you’re going and how you’re getting there.
  • Improving the look and feel of your business; Clients feel comfortable and trust your business is going to give them what they need.
  • Developing HR thinking and systems that make the process of hiring, engaging and keeping great staff easier. Build a great engaged team of people.
  • Implementing better bookkeeping and workshop management systems, so you know where you make money and where you lose money. Your fingers on the pulse of all the key indicators of the health of your business.

SBP The One-Month Business Transformation Programs

Transform Your Business in a Month

How would you like to blow away the biggest hurdle you face right now?

Skip ahead to the individual program details

If you’re anything like most other small business owners (and like me when I ran my building companies), you spend a lot of your days in a state of overwhelm and feeling like you are stuck.

For many business owners those feelings originate in one major issue. One challenge above all others needs to be tackled effectively right now before you and the business can start to move forward again:

  • Maybe it’s your marketing that isn’t working and you are not getting enough new inquiries
  • Or maybe you’re not converting enough inquiries into new sales, or
  • You’re always struggling to pay the bills on time, or
  • Maybe your staff are not delivering for you, or
  • Your business plan is way out of date
  • Or you simply feel that you are drifting from job to job, client to client, without a sense of direction.

Lifting the fog

It was certainly like that for me in my days as a builder in Sydney and I believe most of us experience at least one of those challenges at some stage in our journey. When we are in the midst of such a challenge it can feel like we are surrounded by a fog through which we can see very little else.
What we need at a time like that is to fix that issue and lift the fog… Nothing else. Book a free Discovery Coaching Session with me to explore how to lift the fog.

“Roland’s keen perception has helped me get to the heart of my issues extremely quickly”.

(Rebecca Wells, Clear Horizon Coaching)

Tackle one issue at a time

If you find yourself in that situation from time to time, I want to help you. The One-Month-Business-Transformation programs are short, sharp, fun and intensive 4 week programs designed to tackle one specific business development priority in your business, in one month, and implement a series of effective and simple strategies that will start to transform that specific aspect of your business.

One Month… One Issue… Fix it now!

I will customise each program specifically to your circumstances and your business needs.

The programs consist of a Discovery session (see below) and up to 4 one-on-one 1hr coaching sessions with me via Skype, spread out over no more than one month.

The Programs:

Each of the One-Month Business Transformation Programs tackle one of the following topics (click on each one for more information):

  1. Transform Your Purpose
  2. Transform Your Business Plan

  5. Transform Your Sales
  6. Transform Your Staff

Structure and investment:

All programs come with a workbook or worksheets and relevant resources and tools, such as videos, podcast stories, webinars, articles, surveys and templates.

Each of the programs will be customised to suit your business and your circumstances, we will only be working on the stuff that really matters to you.

Your investment for each of the One-Month Business Transformation Program will be between AUD $1500 and $2500 (plus GST if you are in Australia).

Transform Your Purpose

A Business without True Purpose and Passion, isn’t

Why does your business exist?

What’s it on this earth for? And why would anybody care?

purpose of business Many times when I’ve asked business owners those questions, they answer with a variant of the three standards replies:

  • We deliver a great product.
  • For a great price.
  • With great customer service.

Is that maybe what you would have said?

Probably, right? But the problem is that all your competitors say the same thing (they do, believe me), and so you make it very difficult for your prospective customers to make a decision based on anything other than price, and we all know that competing on price is a dog’s game; We’d all like to stay away from competing on price if we could, right?

Read the chapter on the Purpose of your Business in the first of The Ten Truths Trilogy books for business owners.

What you can expect:

In the Transform-Your-Purpose program we find the unique answer for you and your business to the question of why your business exists, what it’s Greater Purpose is, and why anyone else would care about that. When you nail that answer, once and for all, your business and your life will never be the same again…

I promise you.

“I always leave our meetings feeling aligned, confident and positive about the direction I am heading.”

Transform your Business Plan

A business without a plan achieves everything in it

plan We all know we should have a business plan, all the business gurus, all the business books, our accountants and even aunt Sally have told us so for years… Or maybe you actually did write a business plan a couple of years ago, but you haven’t looked at the thing for over a year and it’s gathering dust in the bottom of a filing cabinet somewhere.

So how do we write a business plan that actually works, a business plan that functions as a tool for the development of our businesses, a business plan that makes a difference.

What you can expect:

In the Transform-Your-Business-Plan program you get to understand how to write a business plan that transforms your business, and depending on your circumstances you’ll either create your first ever living business plan or get well under way to creating one, in a great position to complete it and implement it in your business.

Read the chapter about business planning in the first of The Ten Truths Trilogy business books.

Creating a business plan that works for your business is the first step to transforming your business and your life,

Transform Your Cashflow

A business that doesn’t make Profit and generate Cash is a hobby

cat Many times have I spoken to business owners who tell me they are confused about the fact that they make profit, but they don’t know where the money is. In my days as a builder I also saw lots of business owners get into trouble, because they thought that because they had lots of money in the bank, they must be doing alright.

The fact is that the connection between profit and cash is a loose one generally speaking, unless your business operates entirely on a cash on delivery basis, and very few businesses are.

To build a fun business you simply must keep your eyes on 4 things:

  1. Sales
  2. Production
  3. Invoicing
  4. Collections

Drop your attention from any one of those 4 factors and as sure as God made little apples, you’ll get into trouble.

Read the chapter about financial management in the first of The Ten Truths Trilogy business books.

What you can expect:

In the Transform-Your-Cash-Flow program you’ll learn how to measure those 4 factors. You’ll also learn which one of the four is the most important and how to watch it and manage it like a hawk.

To build a business that is Fun and that sustains you for years to come you have to be all over those 4 factors, like a rash…

I promise you

“Roland helped me focus on the fundamentals and that has now given me peace of mind and control over my business.”

Transform Your Marketing

Marketing is everything and everything is marketing

markeing stand out from the crowd Most of us think of marketing in terms of advertising, and doing social media, sponsoring the local under 10’s footy team or going networking at the local chamber of commerce.

And all of those things fall in the marketing camp, no doubt. But marketing is so much more. The price you charge for your product is a marketing decision. How you answer the phones in your business is about marketing and so is the wording you use on the reminder letters your accounts receivable person sends out to your customers.

Everything you do and every decision you take in your business has a marketing angle to it. In fact if there is anything you do in your business that doesn’t have a marketing angle associated with it you could argue you shouldn’t be doing it at all. The Granddaddy of all the 20th century business gurus, Peter Drucker, used to say that the the purpose of business is to get and keep a customer, so anything that doesn’t contribute to doing that, doesn’t belong in your business. Does that sound a bit extreme? Maybe, but let’s find out what it means for your business.

Read the chapter about marketing in the first of The Ten Truths Trilogy business books.

What you can expect:

In the Transform-Your-Marketing program we’ll examine the opportunities in your business to improve your marketing so that you’ll start to bring more customers through your doors.

To build a business that is Fun and that sustains you for years to come, you have to learn to think about marketing in everything you do…

I promise you.

Transform Your Sales

Nothing happens until we sell something

sales is hard girl selling Without sales there are no customers, without customers there is no income and without income there is no business. It truly doesn’t matter how gorgeous your website looks, how well your apple peeler works or how silently your IT systems are humming along in the background. Business can not exist without sales.

But sales can be hard. There are some people for whom sales comes easily, but you may not be one of those people. The temptation for many small business owners is to believe that if we deliver good enough products or services, the customers will somehow flock to our doors. But the customers rarely will cue up  for our stuff the way they do for the latest Iphone. Somehow we have to get our stuff in front of enough of the right people and then we have to make it so attractive to buy from us that they’ll do so with a smile

Read the chapter about sales in the first of The Ten Truths Trilogy business books.

What you can expect:

In the Transform-Your-Sales Program we’ll look at the opportunities in your business to make sales much easier for you and your business, so that you’ll convert a greater percentage of the people that walk through your doors into paying customers.

To build a business that is Fun and that sustains you for years to come, you must get good at sales…

I promise you

Transform Your Staff

A fun business hires the brightest and keeps the brightest

the right people on the bus The Right people on the bus,
in the right seats,
facing the Right direction.

An old business mentor of mine used to say: “You could have such a great business if it wasn’t for the staff”, and famous business author Michael Gerber said in The E-Myth: “It’s impossible to manage people, because people actively resist being managed and they are unpredictable, only systems can be managed”.

I’m not sure that I entirely agree with Michael Gerber, but he had a point. People complicate things. It’s much easier to manage an office after hours, when everyone else has gone home. But the nature of business is that it’s with people that business creates value. It’s the combined effort and creativity and knowledge of the people of the business, that allow a business to make profit and grow and develop.

But all people are not created equal, some are definitely more equal than others, and some start out looking really good, but half a year down the track we’re not so sure anymore. Maybe that’s even a pattern that seems to repeat itself a lot in your business?

So how do we go about finding the right people and once we have them how do we keep them engaged?

Read the chapter about staff in the first of The Ten Truths Trilogy business books.

What you can expect:

In the Transform-Your-Staff Program we’ll look at the opportunities in your business for finding and keeping the right people and maximising the opportunities we have to get our people to do great work.

To build a business that is Fun and that sustains you for years to come, you must have the right people on the bus, and facing in the right direction…

I promise you

AY YOU, The Small Business Owner

Who are you?

How will you know if you and I are the right fit to design and build your Beautiful Business and Life together?

Good question, Glad you asked

Watch this quick video in which I explain a bit more about the kind of people who enjoy working with me and who get most benefit from from engaging me.

There are many common challenges all of us business owners face from time when developing our small businesses. You can read about some of those common challenges below and you can read and watch a series of real life stories from my clients in their own words here. But there are also many issues I see, that are unique to specific industries and professions. If you are in one of the industries or professions below, you might like to read more about the things that bedevil you in your business on a daily basis.

“Having a coach like Roland who actually cares about you and your business is a great experience. I am well on my way to building a Beautiful Business and Life!”

(Brad Chapman BIC Construction)

Besides the specific industry groups below I also specialise in Husband and Wife operated businesses. Family business such as those can be enormously rewarding in many ways but they present their own set of special challenges. Read about when couples become business partners here and take the “Beyoncé and Jay-Z Family Business Survey” on the same page.

Skip ahead to the special industry pages:

overwhelm and stress in business

Does this look like you?

Nearly all of my clients have the following things in common:

  • You started the business, because you are great at what you do… You decided some time ago that you are simply too good at your trade, profession or skill to spend the rest of your life doing it for someone else.
  • You’ve been going for a little while, probably 2 years or more.
  • You’ve developed the business to somewhere between 2 to 20 employees.
  • You are passionate about your business and you are proud of what you’ve achieved so far.

“Roland helped me manage my business so that it flows and I’m no longer a slave to it.”

(Geoff Anderson, Sonic Sight)

confused stressed overwhelmed lost

And do you recognise this picture?

And most of my clients would recognise much of this picture:

  • Business growth and development has slowed down or stopped altogether, and that frustrates you.
  • You have started to feel that running your business is a lot like playing a game of “Whack the Mole” you never what is going to come up next and where, and you simply don’t get around to the stuff you know you should focus on.
  • You feel overwhelmed a lot because there are simply too many business development priorities screaming for you attention every day (Marketing, Staff, Planning, Systems, Finances, KPIs, Leadership, Innovation, etc) and you don’t have the time, you don’t know where to focus next and you don’t feel all that confident in those business development areas anyway.
  • You seem to spend more time managing crises and extinguishing brush fires than anything else in your business.
  • You’re the first one in the door in the morning, the last one out the door at night and you have to catch up on emails and admin after you’ve put the kids to bed.
  • Business just isn’t as much fun as it used to be.

SBP Business – Life Coaching Programs

All of my Business-Life Coaching

programs designed to support you to

build your unique beautiful business

You weren't  actually planning to build it all on your own, were you?

Jump ahead to the programs here

Being in and around small business for the past 30+ years, I’ve come to understand the value of Business – Life Coaching and mentoring, because I have learnt two things:

  1. That many small business owners often feel overwhelmed and stuck in their daily lives as entrepreneurs. (More about overwhelm and personal wellbeing for small business owners here)
  2. That the most effective way out of that overwhelm is to find the right external advice, guidance, mentoring, or coaching. It doesn’t matter what name you give it, what it comes down to is: Asking for Help

My own experience as the owner of a building company in Sydney for 20 years was exactly like that and I’ve seen the same patterns repeated over and over with most of the small business owners I’ve met. The only sure fire way to step out of overwhelm, get unstuck and start moving forward again as energetically and positively as you did in the early years in your business, is to stop trying to do it all yourself.

Because you can’t do it without external advice and help, trust me on that. (More about the different forms of business support, advice and guidance here)

It takes a village

No business owner who ever built a Beautiful Business and Life, did it on their own. Successful entrepreneurs know it takes a village, and they look for the best advisers, mentors, and coaches they can find. For example you can read the story of one of my most successful clients here.

Fun in Business All of my Business – Life Coaching, mentoring, webinar and workshop programs below are designed specifically for small business owners who do find themselves overwhelmed and stressed in their business. They’re designed for people who want to start Having more Fun in Business again. The programs are aimed at helping business owners discover what their own unique Beautiful Business and Life could really look like and then to help them build it.

It's difficult to decide: Free Five Steps to Discovery Process

My business coaching and mentoring programs are listed below with links to more information. But I know it can be difficult to decide what kind of support and guidance you really need at this stage on your journey as a business owner, just from reading a few pages on a website.

Because of that I suggest we follow my Free Five Steps to Discovery Process before you make any decisions about how or when to engage with me, starting with a free 30 minute Discovery Coaching session (Skype) combined with a short business discovery survey and report.

Next Steps

You can book a Discovery Business Coaching session and Business Discovery Survey through any one of the forms of this page. In the Discovery session, we’ll get to know each other a little and I’ll will ask you a thousand questions to get a good understanding of where you are in your business and life, what your challenges and opportunities are and how I can best support you, allowing me to tailor the next steps in the Five Steps to Discovery Process.

Summary: What’s it all about:

The one Month business transformation programs are short sharp, intense business coaching programs designed to tackle one specific issue in your business, find the clarity and focus you need and implement a series of effective and simple strategies that will transform that aspect of your business.

The Transformation programs consist of up to 4 business coaching sessions of between 1 and 2 hrs each via Skype, spread out over one month. Read about all of the one-month transformation programs here.

“I wanted to find out ways of reshaping my company to enjoy my work more and get back to doing the things that made me choose my vocation in the first place. Roland helped me do this and has re-energised me and my company.”

(Michael Hill, Lightwell)

Why it’s important for you:

At any one time in your business there may be one challenge above all others that needs to be tackled effectively right now before you and the business can start to move forward again:

  • Maybe it’s your marketing that isn’t working and you are not getting enough new inquiries,
  • Or maybe you’re not converting enough inquiries into new sales, or
  • You’re always struggling to pay the bills on time, or
  • Maybe your staff are not delivering for you, or
  • Your business plan is way out of date
  • Or you simply feel that you are drifting from job to job, client to client, without a sense of direction.

Most of us experience at least one of those challenges at some stage in our journey. And when we are in the midst of such a challenge it can be like a fog through which we can see very little else. Is that true for you at the moment? And what is the issue that causes the fog for you?

What you can expect from the program:

Before we even start a One-Month Program, I will help you decide which is the challenge that keeps you awake most, the issue that must be tackled before you can start to look for the horizon again (see the “Discovery Session” below). I will then customise the program to make sure we address that issue in the most effective way possible.

Then we’ll work together intensively for a month to bring about a real change in this aspect of your business. At the end of the month, you will feel a great sense of relief; The fog has lifted and you can start to see the horizon again, and you’ll not be kept awake at night any longer by that issue.

The structure of the “Intensive” ensures that we will tackle the big issues, all the big rocks that have blocked your way to the business you dream of will be blown away or we’ll find a way around them; The program is called “The Intensive” because it is the most intensive one-on-one business coaching and mentoring program you can engage with while also running your business at the same time. It’s is full on and it has made grown men cry… But it works, every time.

Coming on the Journey with me in the Fun in Business Intensive will truly change your business and your life for ever.

I promise you

Free Five Step Discovery Process:

Before we engage in any of my coaching programs, I always suggest we follow my Five Steps to Discovery Process, starting with a free 30 minute Discovery Coaching session (Skype) combined with a short business discovery survey and report. You can book a Discovery Business Coaching session and Business Discovery Survey through any one of the forms of this page. In the Discovery session, we’ll get to know each other a little and I’ll get some insight into what stage you and your business are at, allowing me to tailor the next steps in the Five Steps to Discovery Process.

Brainstorming and sounding board

brainstorming What’s it all about?

Sometimes you need to know you can pick up the phone to someone you trust, because you need a sounding board, some independent input, a sense check, some advice or simply someone to vent your frustration on, allowing you to move on again.

I provide those functions for a number of small business owners, either on an ad hoc basis, when we book in an hour or more and I get you to think about a specific question to focus on in our session, or on an ongoing retainer basis.

The Business Growth Clubs Program is designed to provide small business owners with a true advisory board for their business.

Why it’s important to you:

Most small business owners feel overwhelmed and alone from time to time. There isn’t anybody to brainstorm and share stuff with. Why Business / Life Coaching?

Click here to download my Free Guide to finding the perfect coach or mentor for you.

My Beliefs:

  • I believe most small business owners operate in a state of Overwhelm.
  • I believe each small business is as unique as its owner and hence building your own beautiful business is a process of unique discovery.
  • I believe that in business it is impossible to somehow separate the business from the life of the business owner.
  • I believe that profit can not be the ultimate Purpose of business.
  • I believe business is the vehicle with which to create a beautiful life and hence the vehicle must be in a good state, and well maintained. It needs fuel (profit is the fuel of the business vehicle) and the driver (the business owner) must learn how to drive the vehicle well.
  • I believe that the opposite of Scarcity is not Abundance, but rather “Enough”.

Why does New Perspectives Coaching exist?

To help small business owners Feel Great about Themselves and about their Business, by Making Business Fun.
