On Fun in Business:
The 5 Why’s
Here is your “Just Do This One Little Thing” tip for the week:
Activity: The question is about the benefits that your business provides to its customers, so get out your special note book, and carry out the following exercise for yourself:.
A good technique to get to the bottom of the biggest benefit is the 5 why’s question, example:
1 ) Our product comes in 5 different colours…
Ok Why is that important?…
2) Well, it means the customer has more choice…
Ok and Why is that important?…
3) Well, it means that the customer is more likely to find the product that suits him…
Ok Why is that important?…
4) Well, it means the customer will feel proud to own our product… (Only four Why questions in this case)
And so, the greatest benefit of your product is that it will make people feel proud… So now go and ask yourself the 5 Why questions… with your notebook.
Do this one little thing this week and you’ll be surprised how much easier it is to connect with the right customers, over time.

On Money:
Cash in the bank
Here is your “Just Do This One Little Thing” tip for the week:
Activity: Cash is King, We’ve all heard that saying haven’t we? And in most small businesses, lack of Cash is biggest challenge the business faces every day.
Probably the most effective approach to getting more Cash into your business, is to design and implement a rigorous a collections system.
A system that lays out the steps and time frames as well as the emails and the telephone scripts that are applied at every step and especially who is tasked with running the system.
So this week your “one little thing” is to draft a collections system.
Get your special notebook and decide on the steps:
- Step 1 at 1 days overdue
- Step 2 at 1 week overdue
- Step 3, at 2 weeks overdue
- And finally step 4, whatever the final step is.
Now decide who you’ll delegate the running of the system to, and give it to them to run.
Do this one little thing this week and you’ll be surprised how much more Cash ends up in your bank account, over time.

On Growth:
The perfect client
Here is your “Just Do This One Little Thing” tip for the week:
Activity: Get your special tips notebook and and ask yourself: If there is one client for whom you have the perfect solution, whom you’d most like to work with… Who is that?
Is she a business owner, or employed? CBD? or suburbs?
Give this person a name (My own perfect client used to be called Bob) and you can start to picture him or her and ask yourself: How do I get to talk to Bob? What would Bob think of this? Would Bob respond well to this offer? Etc. etc.
Just do this one little thing… You’ll be surprised how useful it is to have to have this picture of your perfect client in mind whenever you think about marketing.

On Staff:
Talk to your staff
Here is your “Just Do This One Little Thing” tip for the week:
And here is the thing: It’s been proven over and over again all round the world that staff want to be managed, they thrive on it, as long as the managing is done in an empowering, supportive, coaching kind of way.
So this month, book in a half hour coffee with each of your staff members one-on-one.
Prepare three questions:
- What are you proud of in the past month?
- What would you like to improve on?
- how can I best help you in that?
Do this one little thing and you’ll be surprised what a difference it makes in the engagement of your staff over time.

On Time Management:
Let’s get on top of your email
Here is your “Just Do This One Little Thing” tip for the week:
Part of the problem that people often experience with email and how intrusive it can be in their day is this thing about notifications.
You can see that there is a new email in your inbox because Gmail or Outlook or whatever email program you use has a little notification in the bottom of your screen for example that tantalises you… it just sits there blinking at you and you just have to go and look
Try this for a week: Go into the settings of your email program and find where you can turn this notification off… You can turn it off and you may find that something as simple as that can actually make a big difference for you.
Do this one little thing this week and you’ll be surprised how much less anxiety you’ll feel over time about your email.
